TESSA project

SeaConditions is one of the products of "TESSA" (Development of TEchnology for  Situational Sea Awareness), an industrial research project aiming to strengthen the operational oceanography service in Southern Italy and to integrate it with platforms for delivering information on situational sea awareness. The project is supported by PON "Ricerca & Competitività 2007-2013" program of the Ministry for Education, University and Research and focuses on:

  • Setting up a model forecasting system for providing geospatial data at high and very high spatial resolution for both coastal and offshore marine areas of Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and Campania. The geospatial data concerns analysis and forecast data of currents, waves, sea level, temperature and salinity which have been recently produced and made available for the Mediterranean Sea as a result of basic research carried on by the Italian and the European services of operational oceanography (GMES Marine Core Service, marine.copernicus.eu/);

  • Establishing IT-platforms for real time distribution of geospatial information with the highest possible spatial and temporal resolution. The target platforms include web, mobile devices, Electronic Chart Display and Information System;

  • The realization of Decision Support Systems, that is a set of tools for supporting users in managing emergency situations and suggesting a strategy of intervention in cases such as: the choice of the ships' course, the monitoring of the health status of the marine environment and its pollution due to hydrocarbons, the search and rescue operations at sea

TESSA is the result of a collaboration between:

Il Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC), which is responsible for the forecasting systems in the Mediterranean Sea, the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Sea, and for development and operational use of the high resolution systems. Furthermore, CMCC contributes to the modeling of the transport of pollutants, to the development of a center for data analysis and distribution, to the development of the Decision Support Systems and to the TESSA services.

The Institute for Coastal Marine Environment of the National Research Council, which is responsible for the development and operational use of forecast systems for the Strait of Sicily and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Furthermore, CNR-IAMC contributes to the high resolution modeling of marine hydrodynamics, to the numerical simulation of pollutant dispersion and of the trajectory of bodies of various sizes, and to the development of the TESSA services.

Links s.p.a., which is responsible for the development of the platforms for distribution of the Situational Sea Awareness services, which will be provided via a multi-device and multi-channel method. Furthermore, Links s.p.a contributes to the design and development of the electronic archive and the center for data analysis.
